THE THIRTEENTH ANNUAL REPORT

Owing to the cost of issuing these reports, the Secretary is obliged to omit much interesting data that has come to her in the course of a year.

Concerning the English research work: We have employed Mr. Charles A. Bernau, of London, and whereas nothing definite has been found as to the ancestry of our John Maltby of Kexby, Lincolnshire, we are learned some interesting facts.

In May we sent Mr. Bernau twenty-five dollars, and for this sum Mr. Bernau searched the Feet of Fines for Lincolnshire from 1187 to 1244 and from 1509 to 1550, besides making some minor searches elsewhere. The search did not yield much, but it must be noted that these Fines, from 1509 onwards are in a wretched manuscript calendar, arranged chronologicaly and not alphabetically, and it takes a long time to search even one year. The following are the results of this search:

1226. On the Quindene of St. Michael 10, Henry III. (13th Oct., A.D. 1226). Between John de Baiocis, plaintiff, and Swan Cose and Alice his wife, Walter de Ponte and Lecia his wife, William Fiske of Karleton and Ellen his wife, and Edith de Malteby, deforciants of the customs and services which the said John exacted from them for the free tenement which they hold of him in Kateby. Wherefore the same John demanded of them that they should do him the services underwritten. To wit, that for every army of Wales they should provide one horse with a certain sack for carrying a load. And that the horse should be valued, and if it should die the same John would pay the value to them before the Sheriff for the soke of Keylestorp and Keylesterne; and if teh said soke shold fall into mercy by their bad answer they should acquit that mercy and nevertheless they should be in teh mercy of the said John. And that they should collect the aid of teh Sheriff of Keylesthorpe and Keylesterne and pay it to the Sheriff. And that they should summon all the Knights of teh Barony of the said John throughout the whole county of Lincoln to the court of the said John when the court was to be heled. And that they should carry the messages of teh said John throughout the whole country of Lincoln and outside the county at the cost of the said John at twopence a day. And that they should carry a hatchet to cut and burn wood before him in the Army of Wales. And which services and customs the deforciants did not acknowledge. The deforciants acknowledged all the said fee from which John demanded the said services to be the right of the said John and for this John gave them ten marks. (Feet of Fines-Lines.)

The above is translated from the original Latin, and is a very old Lincolnshire Maltby record.

1387. At a Court of the Manor of Ingoldmells, Lincolnshire, held on 13th July, 1387, Robert Gryn rendered unto the lord of teh manor one place of pasture in Little Stepyng (4 acres), to the use of Robert de Maltby and Margery his wife and the heirs of teh same Margery, in bondage, in exchange for 4 acres 1 rood of pasture in Ingoldmells, called Knightland, under such condition that if the said Robert Gryn, his heirs or assigns shall in any way be expelled from the said place of pasture, called Knightland, by the said Margery or her heirs, then the said Robert Gryn and his heirs shall have again the said place called Coupastour. (Ingoldmells Court Rolls).

1534. John Hackthorp acquired from John Maltby and Isabella his wife, 2 acres of land, 6 acres of meadow, and 6 acres of pasture, in Ludney in teh parish of Grainthorpe, Lines. (Feet of Fines, Lines,. Mich., 26 Hen. VIII.)

Mr. Bernau considers this record a very important "find." John Maltby of Kexby Hall (will 1557) named his daughter "Izabell" after somebody. Mr. Bernau writes: "I know you have William Maltby of Ingham (will 1547) with a wife Isabell - but now you must keep an eye also on John Maltby of Ludney, which is about 28 miles from Ingham. Then there is the Isabell Maltbye mentioned in teh will (1545) of her sister Johan Maltbye."

1544. John Dyon, gent., acquired from John Maltby one messuage, 60 acres of land, 10 acres of meadow, and 20 acres of pastrue in Swaby and Walmesgar, Lines. (Feet of Fines, Lines. - Hil. 36 Hen. VIII.)

Under date, 1424, in the Maltby Family History it will be seen that in this year, 1424, one Thomas Maltby, was Parson of Swabey. Doubtless the above John Maltby was a descendant of the said Thomas Maltby.

"1558. On 26th March, 1558, Ursula, daughter of Thomas Maltebe, was baptized at Brocklesby, Lines."

In November, Mr. Bernau wrote that he had "just unearthed a good record of a John Maltbie, of Lines., 1544, giving his residence, AGE, occupation, etc." At this date exact statements as to age are especially valuable as no parish registers exist. We sent Mr. Bernau three guineas for a full abstract of this record and hope to receive it before this report goes to press.

We also sent fifteen shillings to have the name MALTBY inserted in MINOR SEARCH No. 1, which the Genealogical Co-operative Search Club are undertaking this year. The search is to be in Chancery Proceedings from about 1450 to 1550. These are unindexed and contain many thousands of names, consequently are far too large to search for one surname, but through the club, the entire work will be searched and be January, 1919, we shall receive a list of every Maltby mentioned in the Proceedings.*

*The "Star Chamber Proceedings, 1485-1558" yielded only one Maltby reference, as follows: "Malteby, Robert, clerk, Lincolnshire, Hen. VIII., 25/20. He is a defendant in a suit brought by John Broxolme with reference to 'forcible entry.'" The places Walesby, Otby and Risby (all in Lines.) are mentioned.

We were pleased to receive the names of five or six new members this year, but on the other hand death has taken some of our valued members of long-time association.

Mrs. Joseph Judson Marsh (whose name unforturately was omitted from last year's report) died June 8th. 1918. She was a daughter of Phebe Adaline Maltby (7) and descended from Thomas Alanson (6), Zacheus (5), Daniel (4), Daniel (3), Daniel (2), William Maltby (1).

We also have to record the death of Mrs. John II Taylor (Olive Elizabeth Dean), only daughter of Mr. Mrs. Lee Parker Dean, who died Nov. 11, 1918. Seraph Elizabeth Maltbie (7), Charles Benjamin (6), Elon (5), Benjamin (4), Capt. Daniel (3), Daniel (2), William (1).

Mr. and Mrs. Dean have been doubly bereaved, as shortly after the death of their daughter, their youngest son, Harry, was taken ill with influenze, and died within a few days.

The work on the American Genealogy is progressing well. The first seven generations are as complete as is possible and the Secretary is now finishing the eighth generation. Over three thousand names have already been recorded. The question of getting this book printed is a grave one. Possibly eneugh descendants could be found to subscribe sufficient to cover the cost of publishing, they to take the chance of getting their money back from the sale of teh book.

We need more members for the Association -- we have not one hundred members who pay, and $100 is very little to run the work on. We should allow at least $0 for English research each year, and at least $40 for the annual reports and then we have not $10 to cove running expenses.

The Treasurer's report shows that we received $95 in dues this year, but $1 was belated dues for last year and $5 is for advance dues, consequently we are not taking in but about $90 a year.

The names of seven members are included in our Roll who have not as yet paid their dues, but as we expect this is owing to war conditions, and the failure of mail to be forwarded, we include the names believing that we shall receive these dues ultimately.
